Navigating Alcohol During Covid

People are turning to alcohol more than ever to relieve stress, out of boredom, or because everyday is starting to feel like the weekend.

There are MANY reasons why increased alcohol consumption is harmful to our health, but here are the Top 3 Reasons Why Alcohol and Covid Don’t Work.

  1. Health Reasons: WHO (World Health Organization) recommends restricting alcohol as it can worsen the outcome of anyone who contracts Covid-19. Alcohol compromises our immune system!

  2. Alcohol is a depressant. It’s classified as a central nervous system depressant, as it slows down brain function and neural activity. For many, alcohol means a relaxation, but the effects of alcohol, and hangovers, can induce anxiety, depression and increase stress. Yikes!

  3. If fat loss is your goal, alcohol makes fat loss challenging! Your body sees alcohol as a toxin and works to metabolize that first. Alcohol turns down your metabolism by 73%. Wowzers! It’s not so much about the calorie content as it is the effects alcohol plays on your digestive system.

If you still would like to enjoy an alcoholic beverage every now and then, you still can with these tips.

  • Limit your drinking to one day a week. If possible, be sure to get a good workout in before hand and track your alcoholic beverage so it fits into your macros for the day.

  • Decide on how many drinks you’re going to have in advance. Keeping it to 1 or 2 drinks at most is best. Also, be sure to drink water in-between.

  • Vodka soda is the cleanest, and best, option.

  • If you’re going to make a fun cocktail, use real juice from a squeezed orange or lemon, NOT store bought juice. When possible, substitute coconut sugar to sweeten instead of honey or maple syrup.

  • On the days that you’re not drinking, consider making a fun, healthy, mocktail instead. Enjoy this recipe below.
